My Life in Video Games

I pretended, for a while, not to play video games. I never spoke about them. I hid my controllers when friends came over. I passed my time on weekends "relaxing," or doing "not much" at all. We all expect to outgrow childhood, don't we? So, too, I hoped to forget video games.

Now, I am quite thankful that I didn't.

They will escape their incessant infantilization in my lifetime. What potential they have left is, as I see it, rather indeterminate. And as they mature, I hope people who had long ago sworn them off, recalling, perhaps, a loved one's inattentiveness or a son's passionate yelling, find an open mind - and play one.
